Akagera
Rwanda's Big Five Wilderness

Akagera National Park safari

Akagera National Park is Rwanda's great conservation success story. Once nearly destroyed by poaching, this 1,122 km² savannah park now hosts all of the Big Five — lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos — along with zebras, giraffes, and over 500 bird species.

Wildlife Highlights

  • 🦁 Lions — reintroduced in 2015, now thriving
  • 🦏 Eastern Black Rhinos — reintroduced in 2017
  • 🐘 Elephants — large herds along the lakes
  • 🦒 Masai Giraffes — graceful savannah giants
  • 🦛 Hippos & Crocodiles — on Lake Ihema boat safari
  • 🦩 Flamingos — seasonally on the lakes
  • 🐆 Leopards — elusive but present in the park

Safari Options

Akagera offers game drives (morning, afternoon, and night), boat safaris on Lake Ihema, and guided walking safaris. The park has luxury lodges, tented camps, and budget-friendly accommodation near the southern entrance.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season (June-September and December-February) offers the best game viewing as animals gather near water sources. The wet season brings migratory birds and lush landscapes perfect for photography.

Conservation Success

Akagera is managed in partnership with African Parks, a non-profit conservation organization. Your safari fees directly support anti-poaching efforts, community development, and wildlife protection. Lions and rhinos have returned after decades of absence!
